I work in customer support for a paint company. When I first went through training I learned about the right way and wrong way to prepare and to paint. When a customer called in with a problem I sat in judgment of whether they did things right or wrong. Since then I’ve attempted painting projects of my own and realized that there is no perfect paint job. Paint drips where it shouldn’t, surfaces can always be cleaner or drier, it’s hard work waiting for paint to dry, etc. Realizing this allows me to empathize with my cutomers rather than to blame and it makes me more effective in resolving issues. Besides, people are more honest in discussing the issue, admitting to oversights.
