What Petty Desires are Keeping You From Your Spiritual Goals?

To fill ourselves spiritually, we need to empty ourselves of all petty desires.Petty desires aren’t bad, but they focus the mind on things other than our divine goal. We need to reconsider the importance of each desire.

Like the eternal battle between our longing for rich desserts and our wish for being healthy and fit – whichever desire is greater will win.

Everybody’s petty desires are different. For me, fiction books, movies, and TV are like jealous lovers — they don’t want our attention to be anywhere else but with them. It is that which makes them so seductive. It is that which takes me away from my one Goal.

Right. Jesus, Buddha, Moses, any of the great masters – they weren't a slave to their petty desires, at least in the later, more enlightened part of their lives. They didn't have TV but there still were ample opportunities for indulgence, greed, wealth, excess food….Back to me: "I could be worrying, instead I have God". Heh, I like that.

I'm always in my head, i.e. crossword puzzles, fiction books, bridge games. Either the above activities or I am sleeping. I guess I won't get alzeimers but will I make it to heaven?

Hilarious, elderseeker! Love that comment. I think you WILL make it to heaven just for this type of good natured levity.
